Unlocking Opportunities: Apollo Global Management's Success in Asia

In recent years, Apollo Global Management Inc. has undergone a strategic overhaul of its Asia business, spearheaded by Matthew Michelini, Head of Asia-Pacific. Since the beginning of 2022, the company has witnessed a remarkable surge, raising a staggering $35 billion from the region to fuel its expansion endeavors.

Michelini's leadership has been instrumental in tapping into the growing demand for reliable yields from private markets investments, particularly in areas like credit and hybrid financing. This shift in focus has resonated well with clients in Asia, including insurers and institutions managing retirement funds, who seek access to lucrative private market opportunities.

Japan and Australia have emerged as key markets, with insurance companies contributing approximately $14 billion of the total capital raised. To support its initiatives, Apollo has bolstered its regional investment teams, particularly in private credit and hybrids, while also streamlining its Asia real estate equity fund business.

In a recent interview, Michelini highlighted the evolving landscape, acknowledging that traditional tailwinds in the market are waning. Against this backdrop, Apollo has strategically expanded its investment horizon, emphasizing investment-grade credit and hybrid investments to meet the evolving needs of investors in the region.

The company's commitment to Asia is evident in its substantial investments in the region, which grew by approximately 8% over the past two years, reaching $10.8 billion by the end of 2023. This growth trajectory is a testament to Apollo's dedication to unlocking value in the Asian market.

Michelini's expertise and strategic vision have played a pivotal role in cementing Apollo's position in Asia. His proactive approach, coupled with Apollo's extensive network and resources, has enabled the company to forge meaningful partnerships and capitalize on emerging opportunities across the region.

From forging alliances with Japanese pension funds to expanding strategic partnerships with leading insurers like FWD Group Holdings Ltd. and Challenger Ltd., Apollo is positioning itself as a trusted partner for investors seeking exposure to Asia's dynamic markets.

India, in particular, presents a wealth of opportunities for Apollo, with investments in sectors ranging from infrastructure to education and non-banking financial services. Through its hybrid value business, Apollo is fostering long-term partnerships with Indian entrepreneurs, providing strategic guidance and capital to fuel growth and expansion initiatives.

As Apollo continues to expand its footprint in Asia, investors can expect to see a continued focus on identifying value-driven opportunities and leveraging its expertise to deliver sustainable returns.
